God of the Bible “raptured” the Hebrews out of their troubles in Egypt. In a similar way the believers in Jesus will suddenly be taken away.
There are striking similarities between the tribulation in the book of Exodus and the tribulation in the book of Revelation.
For the Egyptians who lost all their firstborns, this night of the destruction angles must have felt like the Great tribulation. God sent sudden and total devastation of a kind that is able to cripple a nation. Egypt also lost its entire army in the disastrous persecution of the Jews, following them into the Red Sea.
The Jews were “raptured” out of their trouble in Egypt. Pharaoh’s army perished.
God of the Bible also kept the Hebrews safe from some of the plagues that came on the Egyptians.
When you read the book of Revelation, you will see similarities to all that took place in Ancient Egypt. Close to the end, just before the seven bowls of God’s wrath is emptied onto the Earth, the two witnesses will be raptured.
But the believers in Jesus will have to live through the ages of the seals and trumpet’s, that through the ages has released judgment and pain on the Human race. Many Messianic believers will be tortured and face martyrdom. Last year alone 165.000 people was murdered because of their Christian faith.
But as the Hebrew’s escaped the worst of the wrath that came up on the Egyptians, so will the true followers of Jesus be taken away.
The final exodus will take place just before God of the Bible strikes the Earth with the final wrath.
A not deniable rapture of the two witnesses takes place in the Book of Revelation, Chapter 11. But the escape comes only after sever persecution.
Back in the book of Exodus, the Hebrews had to face pain and agony during the plague of blood and plague of frogs. They did not escape all the God sent trouble.
But when the plague of flies struck Egypt, something of great importance happened. The evil spirits behind the Egyptian magicians were no longer capable of copying Moses.
When the plague of flies struk the pagan Egyptians, the Hebrews living in Goshen escaped this part of God’s wrath. Also the livestock of the sons and daughters of Jacob were spared, and the Hebrews were “raptured” above the plague of darkness.
By comparing these two seasons of God’s wrath and judgment, you will see the same pattern.
1. God will surely bring judgment on His enemies.
2. The children of Satan has been given the power to perform miracles.
3. Some plagues will effect all people.
4. Those who are chosen will nevertheless escape the worst parts of God’s wrath.
5. Close to the end, those who believe and obey will be raptured out of pain, agony and tribulation.
6. Those who rebel and remain enemies of God, will face the great tribulation, and the final total devastation.

I do not believe in no prosperity gospel. The only thing I place my faith in completely is Jesus Christ, because he’s never failed me.
Revelation 9:4 speaks of the 144.000 who are sealed in Rev. 7:3-8.
I do believe that there is enough evidence in the bible that leads me to believe in a pre-trib rapture.

The first letter in Thessalonians Paul gave us the first clear promise of a pre-tribulation Rapture. Paul called Jesus the one who will rescue us from the coming wrath in chapter 1. If you look up the full meaning of the Greek word translated “from” in 1 Thes. 1: 10, you’ll see an even clearer meaning of what Paul meant. That we are not going to face wrath, has to be understood in the eternal perspective. For Christians who are tortured, crippled, and martyred, a theological debate on tribulation or Great Tribulation is only of academical interest. True followers of Jesus have been slaughtered in millions through the ages.
I feel the difference between persecution and wrath, has to be objective. God has permitted true followers of Jesus to face the ultimate sacrifice. He bluntly says, that those who try to save their life’s will loose everything. But those who give up their life for him, shall win everything.

And though, I still lean towards a pretrib view, the persecuted christians who have died are now living with our Lord Jesus Christ. Glory to God for that.

The problem with a pre-trib end time view, is that there seems to an ongoing Great Tribulation in our days. Ask the Japanese how it felt under the tsunami. What this a part of God’s wrath on the face in the Earth?
What about the 2 billion people who struggle to get food every day? The merciless slaughter of 165.000 Christians in 2009? 80 per cent of them killed in Muslim nations, because they believed in Jesus?
The Global Media do not tell us how horrible life is on Earth for half of its population. For a man who is about to die in the tsunami, its only of academic interest if this catastrophy is a part of the tribulation only, or a part of the Great Tribulation.

The rapture will take place when it takes place. There is pretty little i can do about it. I have no problem with a possible pre-trib rapture. If it takes place this evening, I will be more than happy to meet Jesus in the air……!!!!

I feel this is a deceptive understanding of this verse. In the days of Noah, people were drinking, given in marriage, and made fun of Noah that explained to them that judgment was coming. The flood took them by surprise.

I feel you are applying a verse, that is not a rapture. To the opposite, these passage in Isaiah explains that we are still on Earth, hiding. In Heaven there is no need to hide.
Jesus never said we were going to escape wrath on Earth. He said: If you are persecuted in one village, escape to another.
But the eternal wrath, will not effect believers. That is for the wicked.

I do understand that there has been tribulation since the day Jesus ascended into Heaven. Millions of Christians have died as martyrs.
I do understand that tribulation is a man made disaster, and the Great Tribulation rather God’s wrath that will strike the Earth and billions will perish.

I feel this verse from Genesis chapter six, should not be of a caliber that makes Christians get hot tempered. I am open for different takes on this. I believe in demons, and they come from the spiritual realm of darkness. If you believe in UFO’s, I have no objections. A demon can get projected, and appear in flesh. Just like angles can come in flesh, and walk among us. Like they did in the time of Abraham.

The above verse, is pretty clear to understand. Isn’t satan the ruler of the dark world? Doesn’t satan reside int eh heavely realms? I see no other conclusion than to believe that the above verse means our struggle against the evil forces, and the verses in chapter 6 refers to us putting on the whole armor of God.
on this issue concerning the phrase “as it was in the days of Noah” of Matthew 24:37 NIV and the Nephilims. it would be more schocking if nephilims are connected on this phrase! why?? because of the context of the passage if you try to read and understand what the passage is trying to say on the phrase about the days of Noah from Matthew 24:36-51. it simply means that the coming of the Lord is sudden and unexpected as the flood during the days of Noah!
if we are going to consider the days of Noah literally, then you should not isolate the nephilims only. you should include the coming of the flood again, the ark, and the animals too!

Sometimes we just have to agree to disagree. I feel this debate is about issues, not at all central to Christianity. I hope we can agree on that.
The bible does say there will be a rapture.
Ivar has wrote some articles on it, and if you search his site, he has quoted bible verses to support that there will be a rapture.
I have read what’s called the book of Enoch. Since Enoch was around before the flood I don’t know if it was really the book of Enoch or not. It has some things that I think aren’t right, such as angels taking wives and having giant children who grew to about 450 feet high.
According to Jesus it looks like angels don’t marry but people in this world do.
Luk 20:34 And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
Mar 12:25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.
I do think devils can masquerade as aliens from outer space and fool people into believing that aliens do exist. The book of Jasher also talks about strange creatures but it has some other questionable things that cast doubt on its authenticity. While these books may have existed at one time, the books now available may be someones effort to recreate them.

If we look at the Genesis 6 chapter we are told that the sons of god saw the daughters of men and took wives from them. Their offspring were the Nephilim. The question is who were the sons of God? That’s the essence of the case. We know that the Bible is the best commentary on the Bible so with that in mind if we go to the Book of Job, which many scholars believe predates Genesis we see that the same wording is used. Why alienate the humans?
The reason for God’s wrath was violence and hate. You do not have to be an “alien” to indulge in such activities. Neither in Genesis chapter six, nor today.

Reading Enoch does not make one occultic. Many of the extra biblical canons are gnostic this is true but Enoch is not. In fact the Bible refeences it.

Also Enoch is first mentioned in Genesis 5.
There is much more out there to back up support of Enoch- NOT all extra biblical canons though -I am referring only to this.

Let’s think about this. 450 feet is pretty high. There are cities that don’t have buildings that come close to that.
4,500 feet is almost a mile. So, do you think giants were walking around almost a mile tall?

If so, God of the Bible is the biggest fool that ever existed. There was no need for the flood, that did not change the realities on the ground. And by God promising to never flood the Earth again, Satan gained the final victory.

There are many translations of Enoch. It is important to go to the right one.Even then reading it will still leave you with many questions. Do they “live there”, or did they “live there”. Now, I have really started to get worried about your spiritual health. Goliat was a giant. I do not dispute that.
They have found evidence of Giant Humans that grew to about between 8-12 feet tall. You only need to Google it to see pics of bones and weapons/tools found. From Africa to Megalong Valley in Australia they have found giant bones.

I believe that in the New Age there will be deception about the evolution of man and how man needs to evolve to have a perfect utopian new world order..this may include alien “biology” intermingling with human “biology” to help evolve the human race. This is only my opinion on where this may go. I think it is ok to read Enoch, but not take it as God’s word. There are contradictions as Ivar said, but it may have some things to think about concerning the Nephilim connections. According to the ancient Hebrew text, the Sons of God were always refering to Angels and not the Sons of Seth. Enoch is also quoted in the Bible a couple of times. False Christians from the Toronto Movement, that have touched people and “soaked” them into the occult realm, will end up believing in all kind of doctrines that add to the canonized scripture. There seems to be no end of this outpouring of deception, in the name of “Jesus”.

It is strange that all over the world they found bones, weapons that are massive. Considering people in Genesis lived to over 500 years old they might have needed to be bigger to live that long.

After studying your links, I will make a general comment, and try to give a pin-point explanation on the damage that can occur when Christians accept this kind of unbiblical explanation of the end game on Earth.
1. If there is aliens in other solar systems, than the book of Genesis is not correct.
2. God said He made the stars, stars in plural, but only one Earth. He created man to look after the Earth.
3. Since no man has been able to live on other planets, man has not been able to change the creation order. Man’s mission is to walk on Earth, and spend eternity in either Heaven or Hell.
4. There is no way possible for man to travel to met alien’s inside other solar systems. The distance is simply to long for our 120 years life span.
5. If an “alien” ever appear on Earth and claim to be from a different solar system, we will not be able to verify such claims. Since we have never been there, or seen this place.
6, The Vatican ever claiming an “alien” coming to greet the Pope,, will be a so-called “super revelation”. There will be no verses in the scripture to confirm such an audience. This kind of claimed encounter with aliens from outer space, will surely amount demonic activity.
This is my general view.
Now let me pin-point what Satan might try to copy with His preacher’s of “alienism”.
When the rapture take place, and there will be angles all over the Earth to collect His elect, this will surely be branded as the coming of the hostile “aliens” by the soakers in the Toronto and Word of Faith Movement. When they are not collected, but will be left behind, the “alien explanation” will be the only thing they can hold onto. They will continue to deceive them self, and all who listen to them, up to the day the Messiah will send the cursed people into the eternal flames of Hell.
If the demons, or “aliens” can copy the second coming of Jesus in the sky, than everything has been made permissible by God of the Bible. I am hundred percent sure that Satan will never get permission to do so. It is impossible for God to go beyond the scripture. He is the Word. Keep in mind , that Satan can only do what He gets permission to do.

For me, I do not focus day and night on alien sightings. I merely wonder about what is going on in the news and how it relates to end times. As much as we keep a watchful eye on all of these things I thank you for the much needed reminder to stay focused on all that HE IS instead of what the enemy is doing. Yes Ivar..the “aliens” are demons. I am sure all those writing on this thread agree with that point..That is why the whole alien agenda is a lie and a falsehood. Many secular alien enthusiasts believe man was created from aliens and that eventually the govt. will disclose that to the public. Who knows if and when that could happen. The point is the Vatican does not make crazy alien statements for nothing…they are ahead of the curve on this one..if govts. around the world come out and say we can confirm alien life on other planets and on earth..the face of religion and “Christianity” will change for those who do not stick to the Word of God. I would also encourage a person to google 14th, 15th, 16th century paitings with UFO’s in them. How do you explain that? Why did the Fatima witnesses call the apperition in the sky inside the sun to be a silver disc? Why have numerous Presidents claimed to have seen UFOs such as Reagan and Carter? Why is there a UN council on UFO’s. Sadly the whole point I was tryng to make from the begining has been disgarded. My point is the coming great deception of Matthew 24:24 false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect if that were possible. I believe these false prophets to be demons or fallen angels.

A Kingdom, strong as Iron. Not a Kingdom of Iron. What iron mixed with clay is all about, I have no idea. But It will be broken by iron. Daniel explains about a physical item that existed 2.500 years ago, a primitive tool I presume. Not as strong as iron.

Do you not see that this is what Christ spoke of? This man claims that Peter, John, and James conspired to kill the apostle Paul. Do you not see the danger in having people believe in this man?
I had a man come up to me at work and claimed to be a psychic. He grabbed my hand uninvited, and proceeded to tell me what happened in my past. You know what Richard? This “psychic” got my past correct, but I rebuked him. Because he claimed to be in witch craft, and at the same time said he believed in Jesus. He wanted me to fall for his deception, and had I fell for it, I probably wouldn’t be here typing today.
My point is the devil is hard at work, but we as believers in Christ have the power to rebuke, and teach his word. We must read the Word of God, and never all for such things.

In addition Ivar has made some comments uncharacterist of a church leader. I dont recall Jesus Paul Timothy or the disciples ever judging or labeling christians “Non-Christian or Occultist” or demanding apologies over something they didnt say.
Gloria I would remind you of 1st Timothy 3 1-2 Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer he desires a notable task. Paul called Peter a hypocrite. A Peter that surely believed in Jesus. That must have been harsh language for Peter to take. But after some reflections, even Peter understood that this was words Paul used to call Peter to repent. If Paul had not been stern with a sinning Peter, He would not have loved him.
Paul even handed a man in Corinth over to Satan. Not to harm him, but to see that his soul should not get lost. A though messages of love. Sometimes we all need to be rebuked and disciplined.

The book of Enoch is a demonic book, and people who believe in this message, can easily be taken for a ride by demons.
The book of Enoch is not in the Biblical cannon, but was rejected both by the Church fathers and the Jewish rabbis who canonized the Tannakh (Old testament).
The book of Enoch contradict the book of Genesis, and the rapture of this man. In chapter 17 and 36 of the book of Watchers, the first part of the book of Enoch, is explaining Enoch’s journey through the Earth and Sheol (grave). The book of Genesis explains that Enoch did not die, and did not enter Sheol.
The Astronomical book inside the book of Enoch also contradict the book of Exodus, and the law.
In the Book of Enoch, Each year and each season started always on Wednesday, which was the fourth day of the creation narrated in Genesis, the day when the lights in the sky, the seasons, the days and the years were created.
The sect that made this book, is a kind of 4th day Adventists, and worshipers of kabalism (mysticism). Totally unknown to both Judaism and Christianity. This book reminds me about the desert demon that gave inspiration to an Arab named Muhammad, that also had encounters with Jins, or unclean spirits, presented as Holy.

The word giants are used 19 times in this Bible translation. All of them found in the Old Testament. Jesus did not pay any attention to giants, in his teachings in the New Testament. This man with six fingers and six toes must have been a fearful sight for the sons and daughters of Jacob.
Be aware of this son of a giant, either survived the flood, or has born after the flood. Did these giants from the book of Enoch really come back, and had more sex with the daughters of men?

I do not believe that anyone who base their salvation on “the Lord’s prayer” will be saved. That includes 1 billion Catholics and you. I did not fully understand your question. “LORDS PRAYER John 3:16”: What is that?
To be saved, you will have to do the Father’s will. The rest, will be sent to the fire of Hell. Not my take. But Mathew 7: 21-23.
What is the Father’s will? To OBEY the Word of God. Either you DO that, or you DO NOT.

They weren’t Christians who lost their salvation. They were never part of the elect of God, chosen before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), set apart and sanctified by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:21), and justified by faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). The ones Christ puts away from Himself with harsh words of condemnation, calling them doers of evil, never came to Him in faith, despite their outward good works and miracles.

I have read the last several articles. I am not going to make a comment on religion or express my feelings of what is the right and wrong paths. I look inside myself and i know the truth. This is the same feeling im sure everyone has about their religion. this is why i will not argue. I however encourage everyone to read the Tao Te Chang. Some may call it a religion. I do not call it my religion. I call it a good book. Just like the bible and other philosophical stories. After your opinion last week Ivar regarding the Book of Enoch not being an inspired book of the “holy Spirit” I just wondered, which led me to research it. Again I dont have conclusive opinion but the following research on Enoch is ineteristing. So I would like your opinion.
What we know about Enoch. Enoch lived 365 years before he was taken to heaven by God. Ironically 365 is the number of days in a year. Enoch fathered Methuselah the oldest man in the bible who lived 969 years. Enoch was the great-grandfather of Noah.
Enoch’s name speaks about being “disciplined,” “self-controlled” and “dedicated.” These are all characteristics of the Faithful Church. Enoch father’s name was Jared which in Hebrew means “come from above”. The detail about Enoch coming from Jared speaks of how the Faithful Church is the RESULT of the Holy Spirit who was poured out on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2.
The book of Enoch is directly quoted in Jude 14 “a cannonized epislte.” Enoch’s walk with God and his family geneolgy is described in Genesis 5.18-21 In fact in Genesis 5:24, “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.” We can all agree Enoch must have been an amazing man for god to take him into heaven without death.
The book of Enoch existed in Ethiopia, where the Ethiopian Jews took it with them when they fled Isreal, and is considered “canon” by the Ethiopian church. The early orthodox Christian fathers, Iranaeus, Justin, Clement, all said that it was indeed a inspired work. Could it then be that the church leaders of Europe just didnt get a copy of the book of Enoch until the early 1600’s thats why it wasnt cannonized in Europe?
Look we all know Enoch was a godly man. We know Enochs father was a godly man. We know Enoch wrote the book of Enoch. So why wouldnt it be considered to be a book written and inspired by the “Holy Spirit” Why wasnt it cannonized is the question?

That bible verse is found in 2 Corinthians 11, and as far as your question why wasn’t it cannonized? I believe Ivar posted the errors in this supposed Enoch’s book.

The book of Enoch contradict the book of Genesis, and the rapture of this man. In chapter 17 and 36 of the book of Watchers, the first part of the book of Enoch, is explaining Enoch’s journey through the Earth and Sheol (grave). The book of Genesis explains that Enoch did not die, and did not enter Sheol.
The Astronomical book inside the book of Enoch also contradict the book of Exodus, and the law.
In the Book of Enoch, Each year and each season started always on Wednesday, which was the fourth day of the creation narrated in Genesis, the day when the lights in the sky, the seasons, the days and the years were created.
The sect that made this book, is a kind of 4th day Adventists, and worshipers of kabalism (mysticism). Totally unknown to both Judaism and Christianity. This book reminds me about the desert demon that gave inspiration to an Arab named Muhammad, that also had encounters with Jins, or unclean spirits, presented as Holy.

The book of Enoch is not a New Testament book. Its an Old Testament book. Since the Jews rejected this book as falsehood and did not take it into the Hebrew Bible Cannon, there was no issue of the Christian Church leaders changing that, 1000 years later in 400 A.D.
The book of Enoch contradicts the book of Genesis. That was more than enough reason for the Jews, to reject this book. The books that Jesus quoted from are all found in the Hebrew Bible. Jesus had only one Bible. The Jewish and Christian book we call the Old Testament. Since Jesus never approved the book of Enoch, there is no need for us to take a different stand.

There are a lot of gnostic books, and non-canonized books. You just have to believe in Jesus. He disagree with the Ethiopian Jews. He disagreed with other Jews also, and with the Greeks. The Holy Spirit did not let the book of Enoch enter into neither the Bible Jesus was using, nor the full Bible you are suppose to defend.

A point was made that only God can give life. The physical body is not what matters because “…for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” It is the soul that counts and that comes from God. If the angels came down and had physical bodies with reproductive organs they could marry all they want but it isn’t up to them to give life. It’s God that gives the soul. The soul doesn’t come from you or me.

The truth about the creation of Heaven and Earth is found in the book of Genesis. If we believe in an omnipotent God, why is it so difficult to believe that the Universe was created by Him, beyond what human beings are able to understand?

Man can simply not understand the concept of something eternal. We need to have a beginning and an end, to be able to grasp anything physical. The concept of “Eternity” can only be accepted with a childish form of faith. I do believe my Father, and will obey Him, even when I do not understand.
You’re missing the point. I’m saying the universe was created by him, but why does it have to be infinite? Who is saying that? The Bible isn’t that’s for sure.
And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. The “fimament of heaven” implies a finite universe doesn’t it. Take a look at the links i provided. It’s pretty ground shaking but it’s the truth.

There is no such belief in Christianity of a “Pre-Tribulation or Rapture”. This concept was invented in the 1800’s by Fundamentalist Protestants. It has no ground in Scripture or Tradition- Tradition confirms Scripture. The term rapture is unbiblical!! If this Pre-Trib rapture were true than it would be taught from day one- it would not have been “sealed” for the first 1800 years of Christianity just waiting to be discovered in the 1800’s by heretics.

As Christians overall, we must pray and suffer and do good works in order to participate in our salvation. Fundamentalist Protestants typically believe that only faith is needed, not works and not suffering. As a result, they think that the Church (or at least the best Christians) will be raptured, i.e. taken quickly away, so as not to suffer. The idea of the rapture is based on the theology of salvation. The Catholic belief that we benefit, that we merit, by suffering for Christ leads us not to believe in the rapture.
Problems with the pre-tribulational view are highlighted by Baptist (and premillennial) Check out theologian Dale Moody, who wrote: “Belief in a pre-tribulational rapture . . . contradicts all three chapters in the New Testament that mention the tribulation and the rapture together (Mark 13:24–27; Matt. 24:26–31; 2 Thess. 2:1–12). . . . The passage from Paul’s letter that is the basis for the Protestant rapture is actually speaking about the very end of the world (in the very distant future) at the time of the resurrection of the dead. It is important to have a balanced understanding about sufferings. Jesus took our sufferings on the cross. Still we have to suffer for HIS name’s sake. We are not going to suffer for eternity. In the Kingdom of Heaven, there will be no suffering.
Life on Earth is not going to be miserable. We must enjoy God’s creation, and rejoice that we can be saved. Jesus will return to save those who are WAITING for Him. Be ready. The Bible very clearly states that we will meet Him in the air. I trust and obey. I do not question the correctness of scripture.

In early 1830 Margaret was the very first one to see a pre-Antichrist (pretribulation) rapture in the Bible – and John Walvoord and Hal Lindsey lend support for this claim!
Walvoord’s “Rapture Question” (1979) says her view resembles the “partial-rapture view” and Lindsey’s “The Rapture” (1983) admits that “she definitely teaches a partial rapture.”
But there’s more. Lindsey (p. 26) says that partial rapturists see only “spiritual” Christians in the rapture and “unspiritual” ones left behind to endure Antichrist’s trial. And Walvoord (p. 97) calls partial rapturists “pretribulationists”!
Margaret’s pretrib view was a partial rapture form of it since only those “filled with the Spirit” would be raptured before the revealing of the Antichrist. A few critics, who’ve been repeating more than researching, have noted “Church” in the tribulation section of her account. Since they haven’t known that all partial rapturists see “Church” on earth after their pretrib rapture (see the “church-splitting” chart above), they’ve wrongly assumed that Margaret was a posttrib!
In Sep. 1830 Edward Irving’s journal “The Morning Watch” (hereafter: TMW) was the first to publicly reflect her novel view when it saw spiritual “Philadelphia” raptured before “the great tribulation” and unspiritual “Laodicea” left on earth.
In Dec. 1830 John Darby (the so-called “father of dispensationalism” even though he wasn’t first on any crucial aspect of it!) was still defending the historic posttrib rapture view in the “Christian Herald.”
Pretrib didn’t spring from a “church/Israel” dichotomy, as many have assumed, but sprang from a “church/church” one, as we’ve seen, and was based only on symbols!
But innate anti-Jewishness soon appeared. (As noted, TMW in Sep. 1830 saw only less worthy church members left behind.) In Sep. 1832 TMW said that less worthy church members and “Jews” would be left behind. But by Mar. 1833 TMW was sure that only “Jews” would face the Antichrist!
As late as 1837 the non-dichotomous Darby saw the church “going in with Him to the marriage, to wit, with Jerusalem and the Jews.” And he didn’t clearly teach pretrib until 1839. His basis then was the Rev. 12:5 “man child…caught up” symbol he’d “borrowed” (without giving credit) from Irving who had been the first to use it for the same purpose in 1831!
