Why is there a Hell?

This is a good question, which requires a good answer.

The eternal lake of fire is a place I hope as few as possible souls will have to suffer.
The eternal lake of fire is a place I hope as few as possible souls will have to suffer.

Hell is a consequence of the angel Lucifer ( Satan ) and his rebellion in heaven. Lucifer tried by a coup to take over the throne of God.

As a result of this attempted coup, Lucifer was kicked out of heaven along with a third of the angels, all who took part in the rebellion . This dark angelic hosts have received the verdict . At the end of this age , they will be thrown in the Lake of fire, a place that Jesus Christ also refers to as Hell.

– Why are people tossed in the lake of fire ?

Satan wants to revenge himself on God , and wish to apply the Lord a big loss . He does this best by taking as many souls as possible to this final destination. By tricking people to reject God ‘s laws and instructions, the Devil achieves his goal. Men who are fooled to reject God, places himself under the same judgment as Satan already have been given.

What is the solution ?

Jesus Christ has given man a free will . We can listen to the gospel , and we can accept that we are lost and need to be saved . We can only be saved by submitting our life to Jesus the Messiah, and receive the grace that flows to us from the cross . Or we can reject the good news, that Jesus paid for our sins taking the punishment we all deserve. If we rejects the offer of mercy,  then we will not experience mercy.

The Bible is clear that the choice we make will have serious consequences . Jesus is Lord over life and death. Jesus will return as a judge .

Matthew 25: 41

Then he will say to those on the left , ‘Go away from me , you who are cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels .

The book of Revelation : 20:10

And the devil who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are. Where they will be tormented day and night forever.

  1. Actually, “Lucifer” is a latin translation of his name, which is really “Helel”. If you consider that it is a name with Semitic origin where the vowels are interchangeable, Helel, who was the Arch Angel who led the Praises in heaven, also the root of the word “Halel” which means “praise”, but what is more interesting is the Arabic anagrams (Arabic is also a Semitic language, as it hails from Aramaic).
“Helel” is the Arabic word for “New Moon”
“Halal” is the Arabic word for Sacrifical meat
“Allah” is the Arabic name of the ancient Moon deity.

    1. Lars,

Shalom. You are correct about the word “Lucifer” migrating from Jerome’s Latin Vulgate, which was commissioned by the pope in the late 4th century.

Would you provide a source text for the Hebrew word “HLL” in your comment above?

The mention of “Lucifer” is limited to the Book of Isaiah, in some of the English translations.

The Hebrew text of Isaiah illustrates two words which translate to “son of the dawn” – “ben shachar” (bn shr).

In other portions of Tanakh, “the adversary” -“Ha satan” is used.

      Thanks in advance.

  2. It is worth noting Revelation 20 verse 14

And death and HELL were cast into the lake of fire, this is the second death.

Using the above verse we can see that the lake of fire and hell are two different things.

Hell is a mutation of Sheol and Sheol means grave.

When we die we get buried in a grave.

At the end of the age when all have been resurrected and judged, those who inherit eternal life because their names are found in the book of life will escape the lake of fire. Those whose names are not will be cast into it, and because death itself will be no more, it too along with the need for the graves will all be cast into the lake of fire for destruction.

It is over 1900 years since the Lord Jesus ascended to heaven.

    Paul preached that

    2 Thessalonians 2
7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

The mystery of iniquity was at work in the church changing the doctrine that had been preached.

Paul urged that we test all things and hold fast the truth.

God has prepared a place for those whose names are written in the book of life and for those whose names are not.

And when the times comes everything that no longer has a purpose will be thrown into the lake of fire.

  3. The guy above is right. The lake of fire is figurative. The bible says it is the second death. Fire completely consumes and destroys. You don’t put something into fire and have it burn forever. It is destroyed. That is what will happen at the end. The wicked will be completely destroyed. The old test says they will be burned up like chaff and neither root or branch will be left of them. It is this destruction that will last forever and that references to the smoke of their torment being forever and eternal fire are referring to. It must be rembered that the lake of fire is a figure for eternal death and destruction. The immortality of the soul doctrine that teaches that all people live forever is not biblical. John three sixteen says that god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believes on him should not perish or die but have everlasting life. The choices are life or death not good life or bad life of suffering and torture. God is not an evil sadist. Those who are wicked will not be kept alive to be tortured forever like some demonized emperors used to do in the Middle Ages where they would keep people alive as long as possible but tortured slowly and horrifically. God takes no pleasure in their demise. He will put them quickly to death as moral Christian nations do to those deserving the death sentence.
As he also stated the word hell often is sheol which should be translated grave.

    1. @Lisa truitt: “Fire completely consumes and destroys.”

      Shalom. It is written:

“. . . and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, yet was not consumed.” (Exodus 3:2b).

In G-d’s Word – which is Truth – there is an example of a bush burning with fire, yet not consumed.

Please reconsider your position, turn from it and cry out to King Jesus to be born again so that you can enter the Kingdom.

G-d is thrice holy. He is rigidly righteous and just in His judgments. (Psalm 116:5; 119:137; 145:17; Isaiah 45:21; Jeremiah 12:1; Daniel 9:4; Revelation 4:8).

  4. God is thrice Holy and magnificently beyond comprehension.
