Bible studies # 60: Jesus was cursed by man not by God

When Jesus became a curse for us, He was cursed by men not God.

Jesus carried the sins of the same men who cursed Him, and crucified Him. They were cursing God.

A very dangerous faulty teaching is that Jesus was cursed by His Father, who rejected Him on the cross.

Such a claim is a huge mistake. God can not curse God. If Jesus was cursed by God, than Jesus is not God.

Than: What kind of curse did Jesus become?

Jesus never sinned. Neither did He sin when He bore my sins on the cross.  It was men who mocked Him, ridiculed him, beat Him, flogged Him and crucified Him. Jesus let this happen, and God the Father did not join men in this kind of cursing of the Messiah.

Carrying all the sins that ever has been, or will be committed, Jesus felt rejected. His load was more heavy than a human mind can ever figure out. But the Father never rejected Him, nor denounced Him.

   Numbers 23:8
“How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? And how shall I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?

By His blood Jesus has redeemed all men who believe and obey Him.  The Father did not renounce His Son. He rather let the Son parade all evil forces, and gaining victory over them on the cross.

 Colossians 2:15
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

You can simply not redeem anyone from a curse of God by being cursed by God.  Jesus rather redeemed us from the curse of God, by being cursed by men. Men rejected Jesus, simply because He correctly claimed to be God.

Jesus was not only fully a man. He was also fully God. God can not curse God. Jesus did not sin. That is why He could redeem us from all kind of curses, by becoming the perfect sin offering.

  Galatians 3:13
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),

   Deuteronomy 21:22-23
“If a man has committed a sin deserving of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,  his body shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall surely bury him that day, so that you do not defile the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance; for he who is hanged is accursed of God.

Just reflect on this:

If all who are hanged are cursed by God, than all hanged Christian martyrs were also cursed by God.  So were the Old testament hero’s who were hanged by the Roman soldiers.

What Paul tries to explain is that those who has been hanged because they have sinned against the Law, were cursed. That does not include Christian martyrs, nor God the Son. Jesus the Messiah could not, and did not breake the Law.

Is it possible for a man to curse God?

Absolutely. Just read about all that Jesus had to go through. The first person who suggested that a man should curse God, was Job’s wife.

  Job 2:9
His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

To curse Abraham, is like cursing God. Because God will respond with a curse.  To curse the poor and needy is also like cursing God.  When Jesus comes back such people will be sent to Hell. Just read Matthew 25:31 onwards.

Is also possible of accusing God of cursing those who are not cursed. This kind of accusation has brought man made harm to the Jewish people. False teachers say God of he Bible cursed the Jews by giving them the Law of Moses. This kind of teachers explains that the Jews who have rejected the Messiah, are still cursed by God.

 Galatians 3:13
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”.

In this teaching Paul the Jewish Apostles quotes from the Law of Moses. His teaching is often misused.

   Deuteronomy 27:26
‘Cursed is the one who does not confirm all the words of this law by observing them.’ “And all the people shall say, ‘Amen!’”

You are spiritual blind if you claim that the law of Moses is a curse. The Bible explains that a man who do not observe all the words of the Law, is cursed. That is a huge difference from claiming that the Law is a curse.

The Bible explains that the Law is good.

 Psalm 119:92
If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.

We all sin, and therefore we all break the law. The Law makes us aware that we all need to be saved from our own sins.

1.John 3:4

Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

All men needs to be saved from our sins. Only Jesus can save us.

  1. Dear Ivar,
Why are you using a illustration from the highly anti-semitic movie “The Passion of the Christ”? And not only anti-semitic, but also anti-Christian, and anti-Jesus, and A-historical to bout (Jesus did not have long hair, because the law forbade the high priest (Jesus was ours!) to have anything but short cropped hair!)

    1. Dear Lars-Toralf.

      Shalom.

      Thanks for this comment.

I have earlier written that Passion of Christ is a movie that do not tell the full truth about Jesus. In regards to the used picture, it is an illustration of a Messiah that was cursed by man. There is nothing in this article that promotes “Passion of Christ”. Whatever illustration I use, there will be someone who do not agree with the choice. I do respect such viewpoints.

To focus on the length of the hair of Jesus, is totally besides the point. So is the shape of His face, body shape or whatever.

  2. God lay our curse upon Him. We were cursed through our sin, our disobediance. Just like the sins were put unte the sinoffering, the sheep that war sent out in the desert to die, carrying the sin that war put upon him by the priests in the Tanach, OT, so Jesus bore our sin and curse and died and it was accepted by God. So in a way He became a curse (for us). We were comdemned and He made up for it so we can be free. God can not curse God, but He can take the curse upon Himself. Thats why His word had to become flesh, one of us, so Jesus could redeem flesh, that is us humans

    1. Dear Rebecca.

      Shalom.

      You wrote:

God can not curse God, but He can take the curse upon Himself

      My reply:

Jesus was fully man. That is why He could take our curses up on him self. Jesus was also fully God. That is why He could forgive sins. On the cross Jesus is still 100 per cent man and 100 per cent God.

    2. Dear Rebecca

      Shalom.

There are catastrophic levels of false teachings around within claimed to be Christianity, and millions of people are being royally deceived. The most dangerous deception is to rob Jesus of His eternal divinity, or to claim that He has not an earthly human mother. Such a claim rob Him from His humanity.

      Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

To claim that Jesus is not God, even only for a second, makes Him a created being. If so, Jehova Witness and Islam tells the truth about who Jesus is.

There are so much false teachings about Jesus around in our “Churches”, that it is almost not believable. I have seen 150 people blabbing what a Charismatic pastor demanded his flock to copy, without anybody raising objections.

  3. Dear Ivar, I dont fully understand how your response corresponds my comment, BUT I fully agree with what you’re writing

Dear Ivar, I dont fully understand how your response corresponds my comment, BUT I fully agree with what you’re writing.

      My comment:

My point is that Jesus was not cursed by God. Another way to try to explain what Jesus has done for us:

If I murdered someone in the morning, I deserved to be hanged. A man named Jesus came into the picture, and freely took my punishment on Him self. He took the curse I had brought on my self, and died in my place so I could be set free.

The Judged (God) accepted this replacement, and released me from the prison.

Would such a replacement lead to Jesus being cursed by the Judge?

Absolutely not. This act of Jesus would be the ultimate agape love. And the Judge response to me, would be the perfect product of forgiveness.

The judged did not have to release Jesus from the dead. Jesus Him self is the author of life, the very creator God. Death has no power over Him. Jesus gave up His life for me, as a free gift. And the most beautiful part. This was a command He had received from the judge…!!!!!

  4. Ivar, I am always blessed by the Holy Spirit when reading your articles and have fellowship with You. May the Living YHVH continue to increase you more and more in all revelation and wisdom and sound doctrine.

  5. Jesus was cursed by God because God told Abraham that he would curse anyone cursing Abraham. You can’t tell me no one ever cursed Abraham. Since someone surely has cursed Abraham, and since Jesus bore our sins, then Jesus must have born that particular sin and therefore was cursed by God.

    1. Dear Eric

      Shalom, and love in Jesus.

It is practically a part of spiritual insanity to claim that “Jesus was cursed by God”. God can not curse him self. The truth is that Jesus bore our curses to the cross. And nulified them with His own blood, reedeming us. That is something totally different. Jesus was sinless. He did not have to pay for anything.
