Roman Catholics in Goa in India burn effigies of Jews on the eve of 23rd of June. The tradition has its roots in the burning of Jews during the Inquisition.

Goa Herald is one of four English dailies in Goa. In Sundays edition on page two, a picture of local Roman Catholics are published. They stand in front of “Judeo”, an effigy to be burnt.

The burning of “the Jew” has its ancient roots in the burning of “New Christians” from Portugal during the Goa Inquisition. They were all Jews forcefully converted to Roman Catholicism.

The achieve of this Inquistion tribunal went missing, and historians have different estimate of the number of trials. But an consensus believe there were around 16.000 cases were handled by the clergy in the city of Old Goa. The Goa Inquisition lasted from 1560 A.D to 1812 A.D.  Both Evangelical Christians, Jews and Hindus were burnt at stake in unknown numbers.

Navhind Times in the largest English daily in Goa. On Saturday 23rd of June, Maria De Lourdes Bravo Da Costa Rodrigues published a feature, explaining the rituals taking place on this local feast. In Goa it is named  Sao Joao, or in english fest of John the Baptist.

This is some of the information in the feature:

 – On the eve of the feast, June 23rd, youth make an effigy Judeu, a Jew, from straw, and dress it up in a colorful outfit. Later in the evening the effigy is burnt, and firecrackers are bust.

It symbolizes that the Old Testament has passed away, and the New Testament has been installed. Some of the youngsters beat the beat the Judeu with a coconut stick (piddo) simultaneous shouting abuses and condemning him. The beating of Judeu probably symbolizes the animosity against the Jews who objected to Christianity. The effigy could also represent Judas, Christ’s apostle who betrayed him for a sum of thirty pieces of silver.

The feast of Sao Joao in Goa is a display of drunkenness and partying. It is quit common that adults jump into to their own wells as a ritual during the festival, and polluting their own drinking water.

The burning of the “Judeo” was more popular some decades ago. Still this display of antisemitism can get publicity in the Newspaper Goa Herald, which is traditionally the preferred paper of the Roman Catholic. Goa Harald was published in Portuguese up to the 1980-ties, as the main news source for Catholics in a state that was a Portuguese colony up to 1961.

Catholics in Goa in India continue their Jew-hate

India church says Israeli tourists inhumane, sent to Goa by government to repress army service‬‬.

The archbishop of Goa and his priests offer incense to a corpse, the remains of claimed to be Francs Xavier of Pamplona in Spain.

An unprecedented letter issued by the Catholic Church in the Indian state of Goa slams Israeli backpackers in the area, referring to them as inhumane.

The letter, drafted by local church officials in Goa, was sent to churches in Jerusalem and in the Palestinian authority in the aims of showing solidarity with Arab Christians living in Israel and in the territories.

In the letter, Goa church officials say they are “horrified” by Israel’s “occupation policy” and its results, while vowing to no longer remain silent on the issue.

The message takes on anti-Semitic undertones when church officials refer to a “study” they undertook some three years ago into the behavior of Israeli backpackers who arrive in Goa in order to “forget and repress their military service.”

The letter claims that many of these Israeli tourists have lost their humanity and have become their own victims as result of the brutality of Israel’s “illegal occupation.”

According to the study, Israelis lose their minds because of the need to kill during their military service, prompting the government to send them on relaxing vacations to sites such as Goa. Israelis are a nuisance to their surroundings and their aggressive character drives away other tourists, the study says.

‘Smells like anti-Semitism’

Israeli tourists in Goa said they were very disappointed by the letter, which they claimed contradicts the good relationship between backpackers and the local population.

“Those who wrote it are simply detached from what really goes on here,” said Itamar Rafel, who is currently in India. “After all, the Indians make a good living from our tourism, give their stores Hebrew names, and are very hospitable.”

Another Israeli tourism, Rotem Natan, said: “Obviously there are Israelis who behave impolitely, but there are also Americans like that. Why are they focusing on us? It smells like anti-Semitism.”

Responding to the report, Goa’s tourism minister said he was surprised by the harsh accusations made in the letter, noting this it clearly does not mark official government policy. Goa’s residents have no ill feelings towards Israeli tourists, who should feel comfortable in the area, he said, adding that he will further look into the contents of the letter.

As opposed to other states in India, the Church plays a key role in Goa’s daily life and local politics. About one-third of the area’s residents are Catholics who converted under Portuguese rule.

My comment:

That Jew-hate is flourishing among Roman Catholics in Goa, is not a huge surprise. This small state on the west cost of India was the center of massacre of a Jewish settlement on the arrival of the Portuguese from 1510 A.D onwards.

The Inquisition in Goa had 16.000 trials. In their hundreds, Jews and evangelical Thomas Christians were burnt at stake by Roman Catholic butchers.

Catholics in India bury the dead with their gold

Burying the dead with valuable trinkets is a popular practice in Goa.

Roman Catholics in Goa in India are known for their worship of idols. A local saint of wood is carried on the shoulders of the Papal faithful.

This is a statement of Raul Colaco, Parish Priest in the village of Goa Velha in India.

Colaco told the Times of India he was forced to announce this stern measure after two fresh graves in the Goa Velha church cemetery were vandalised by unidentified people earlier this month.

According to a complaint registered with police, the vandals were in search of gold trinkets which were buried along with the bodies at the time of the funeral.

Gold diggers have always been attracted to gold. They collect among both the living and the dead, many of them with a Bible in their hand.

“The people have gladly accepted the decision.

“Because if someone notices gold on a body at the time of the funeral, then that particular coffin could be the next target,” Colaco said.

He said burying the dead with gold and ornaments also proved to be a source of bickering amongst the surviving family members in the future.

My comment:

The practices of burying the dead with gold and Earthly belongings has no basic in Biblical Christianity.

From which spiritual source have the Catholic learned this?

From ancient Egypt, I presume.

The priests of the Pharaohs told them that their gods demanded that the kings should take with them their gold into their afterlife. Later the Egyptians discovered that many tombs had been robbed, and the priesthood who buried the royals had become rich.

There is a lot of information about such tomb looting. Egyptians also faced Imperial gold diggers sent by the King of England.

In correct Christian teaching, there is no golden option in the afterlife. The departed soul will leave all his gold on Earth behind, and spend the eternity in the flames of Hell.

Rather the souls of those who had no gold and silver, will experience a rapture. And when these souls enter the Kingdom of Heaven, they will be given a new heavenly body.

Lets learn from Peter,  the Jewish Apostle.

Acts 3:6:
Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.”
