American Republicans offer rebuke to UN

Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives have criticized the United Nations as “bloated” and “ineffective” and vowed to press for reforms and a reduction in U.S. funding.

The US Congress doesn't often give you anything to smile about, but today they did.

At a January 25 meeting of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, members characterized the world body as inefficient and corrupt. Committee Chairwoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is leading the drive to slash funding and has introduced a bill to get the UN on a rapid schedule of reforms.

In a statement, Ros-Lehtinen said she planned to introduce a bill that would condition U.S. contributions to the UN on “real, sweeping reform,” including changing the UN budget so that member governments can offer to fund only the programs they like.

That way, she said, “U.S. taxpayers can pay for the UN programs and activities that advance our interests and values, and if other countries want different things to be funded, they can pay for it themselves.”

One Republican member of the committee, Dana Rohrabacher of California, said “the UN should be one of [the United States’] prime targets for reducing expenditures in order to bring down this deficit in the next few years.”

My comments;

In John 1:46, a man named Nathanael asked his friend;

Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?

If Nathanael were alive today, he would probably ask the same question about Washington, but with this news, we could give him a good answer.

The Republican Party takeover of the US Congress offers a ray of sunshine in the struggle against a One World Government. That there is even an effort being made to cut funding to the evil and corrupt United Nations is good news, even if there can’t be much serious expectation that it will go very far.

But if you’re an American citizen, and you like the idea of fighting back against a One World Government which will be powered by a spirit of anti-Christ, you might want to give your elected officials a call and tell them to support this measure. Believe it or not, they listen to calls like that.

Theophony marked by Greek Orthodox

The Greek Orthodox Church called Friday on the peoples of the region to “love one another”, as thousands of pilgrims from different countries marked Theophany, or the “manifestation of God”, at the Baptism Site of Qasr al-Yahud near Jericho.

The Greek Orthodox Church in the Holy Land has lost its focus on Christ and become an element in Palestinian nationalism.

This is a call for everyone to be united for the good and well-being of the world,” Archimandrite Nektarios Mansour told around 5,000 Christians who gathered on the east bank of the Jordan River, in a speech he delivered on behalf of Greek Orthodox Bishop Benedictos.

We ask God to lessen the suffering of our people in Iraq and Palestine, and to reduce the pains of our brothers in Egypt. Abandon hatred and love one another, as this was the command of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Theophany (the Greek version of the Anglican Epiphany) marks the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Messiah and the second person of the Holy Trinity – along with God and the Holy Spirit – which took place at the time of his baptism.

In addition to Orthodox Christians from several cities across Jordan, the pilgrims came from several countries including Russia, Greece, Moldavia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Belarus, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Syria and the Palestinian territories.

For 34-year-old Russian pilgrim Inessa, Theophany was an opportunity to “cleanse your soul at this holy place.”

My comments;

Oh my, where to begin?

It should come as no surprise that, like the Catholics, the Eastern Orthodox churches are promoting “global unity” which specifically excludes the Bible believing church as well as Israel and the Jews.  That there will be a One World Religion which unites all anti-Christ religions in the End Times is explicitely prophecied in the Book of Revelation.

The Greek Orthodox priests injunction to follow the command of Yeshua Ha’Mashiach (Jesus Christ) to “love one another” is good, but it comes immediately after a statement which makes it clear that “our people” does not include Israeli Jews, as far as he’s concerned (and he speaks with the official authority of the church.)

Among Arab Christians, their identity as “Christians” is often inseparable from and superior to their political identity as “Arabs” and this makes the Greek Orthodox leaders in Jerusalem political leaders as well, which is not only inappropriate but totally unscriptural, not that we expect the traditional churches to be very concerned with what the Bible says (they abandoned it and started following their own man-made traditions centuries ago.)

As I have said before on this blog, Qasr al-Yahud is indeed the likely place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus.  But for poor Inessa from Russia (who has probably been told from childhood that she is not qualified to understand the Bible for herself and must rely on a priest to interpret it for her) to call the site a “holy place” with special powers that other rivers don’t have is to make an idol out of it. Many people have been deceived by Catholic and Orthodox churches to believe such nonsense about shrines and “holy places” etc. (which actually has its origins in ancient paganism.)

I have tremendous pity for people like Inessa, and we must all pray daily for her and those like her who are following anti-Christ traditions.

II Timothy 3: 1-5;

But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.
