The Pope reveals he could have ended up in jail and that one of his nieces has married a divorced man.
Pope Francis has described himself as a ‘sinner’ in need of God’s mercy, as he reveals how the Roman Catholic’s debates over divorce have impacted on his own family. In the first book of his papacy, the Pope – a frequent visitor to prisons – told how he could have been in jail if he was wasn’t a pontiff and refers to his ‘special relationship’ with convicts.
The revelation came as he declared one of his nieces had married a divorced man in the book The Name of God is Mercy.
In extracts, Francis said: ‘I have always been very much attached to them, precisely because of the awareness that I have of being a sinner.’
‘Every time I cross the doorway of a prison, I always ask myself, “Why are they are here, and not me?” I should be here, I should deserve to be here. Their fall could have been mine. I don’t feel superior to those in front of me.’
The book will be published on Tuesday in 86 countries and compromises a series of interviews, some of them highly personal, with the 79-year-old Argentine-born pope.
He said: ‘Shame is a grace: When we feel God’s mercy, we really are ashamed of ourselves. Despite all our past of wretchedness and sin, God remains faithful to us and raises us up.’

Being a watchman on the walls of Rome, I picked up this story.
The Pope claims to be “a sinner”.
Yes he is. But the moment the Pope understands the meaning of sin, he would quickly tell anyone not to call him “Holy father”. That would be a surrender to the commandments of God, and a sign of true repentance.
And do not call anyone on earth “father”, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.
The Bible says we shall not call religious leaders for “fathers”. We have only one Father, God Him self.
If the Pope do renounce the office of the “holy fathers”, it will be a bombshell. Millions of people will be lead to serious reflections and repentance: Why has the Roman Catholic Church called there priests for “fathers” during the centuries?
The doctrine of the infallibility of the Pope must also be scraped. When the Pope sins, he has obviously surrender to the wrong conclusion, and done works that are not pre-planned by God.
No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
The word “grace” can also be misused. God do not permit his children to continue down the path of sin, a broad road that leads to destruction. The Messiah call people to regret sin. And to renounce sin in their life, and surrender to truth.
Please do not act on what people say. A lot of religious people, can even quote scriptures by their fingertips. But rather look at what they are doing. Hypocrisy is exposed by the lack of willingness to repent, when sin is revealed. The lack of repentance is followed by bad fruits.
