Professor  George Thinker critizise the Pope for making a brutal opressor a “saint”.

This is the reaction of George Tinker on the occasion of Pope Francis making Franciscan munk Junipero Serra a “saint” of California.

Thinker is Professor of American Indian Cultures and Religious Traditions at Iliff School of Theology and author of Missionary Conquest: The Gospel and Native American Genocide.

Thinker reacts to the canonization of Junipero Serra done by Pope Francis during the present visit to the US. Thinker recalled the “almost slave-labor conditions” that Native Americans were subjected to under Serra’s leadership.

Credited with baptizing around 90,000 Indians during his lifetime, there is wide agreement among historians that Serra’s evangelism tactics were harsh by any modern standard.

Many native Americans reacts sternly against the sainthood granted to a criminal munk.

Citing accounts from Serra’s own lieutenant, Tinker said the Franciscan priest prohibited converts from leaving his Christian compounds, often called missions, and forced them to endure grueling labor on Spanish-run farms. Any attempt to flee was met with brutal reprisals.
“The army would round the person up, bring him back to the mission compound, and then the person is punished,” he said, “The mission compound was run kind of like a military boot camp.”

A group of Native Americans remains opposed to the canonization. They prayed at the mission’s cemetery and to express disappointment that the pope ignored a request to listen to them. “Supposedly as a man of God that he doesn’t care what thousands of California Indians are saying, even to come and meet with us,” Esselen Nation Tribal Chairwoman Louise Miranda Ramirez said.deb

“Serra was not the face of evil”, says Deborah Miranda, a professor of literature at Washington and Lee University and an Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Indian. “But there were so many atrocities happening and he closed his eyes,” she said. “I don’t think he should be rewarded for that.”

My comment:

Lets keep the unbiblical canonization process of the Roman Catholic Church for a moment.  And rather focus on the injustice done to people who were forcefully converted to Catholicism druing the failed Spanish conquest of California.

To canonize a brutal oppressor of the Spanish colonialism is yet another example of the double talk of the present Pope. He speaks against Capitalism and oppression of the poor in one TV-camera. And in the next, he praises Franciscan munk Junipero Serra.

A lot of people do not mind that the Christian faith is defamed by the Pope. They use the papacy as an example of why they do not believe in the Biblical faith in Jesus.

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

Let it be underline, one more time. The Pope is an antichrist. All true evangelical Christians have held this view since the Reformation.  In our days, a lot of apostate protestants tries to revoke the lessons of the Reformation, and have started to embrace the Pope as a Christian leader. Do not listen to them, but rather rebuke and resist them.

May Jesus the Messiah have mercy on all deceived souls.

    1. Dear Kalev Efrayim and Allistar

      Shalom, and love in Jesus.

      Ivar,
I failed to completely unsubscribe from you site, saw the email in my inbox about this article and decided to read it. You claim to be Jewish and proudly proclaim you eat pork, then you publish a piece of heresy like this. Besides being a false teacher, a wolf in sheeps clothing, you are also a heretic filled with apostasy.
I won’t forget to completely unsubscribe now.

      Now Kalev writes:

      Shalom Ivar,
I agree 100% with your comment on this one – 100%

      (end of comments).

      My reply:

Kalev seem to have beefed up his comments. Why is he not been able to make up his mind?

      1. If I read a post of yours that tells the truth I’ll give my comment of approval like I did here.
When you advocate breaking YHVH’s instructions like eating pork I’ll call you on it.
I happen to believe, and the Scriptures back it up, that His Torah is still in effect but keeping Torah is NOT our vehicle to salvation, belief in Yeshua is and once we have arrived at that conclusion Torah is for the believer in Yeshua as our Savior and kinsman Redeemer.

      2. Peace to you Ivar.

Forgive me, but I have copied and pasted Kalevs words below.

        Kalev boldly calls you

        1. A heretic.
        2. A false teacher.
        3. A wolf in sheeps clothing.
        4. A heretic filled with apostacy.

I do recall the comment now, but, you did say that Kalev had cursed you. None of the above are pleasant accusations to level at you or anybody, but none of them are curses either. The problem is not with the accusations at all.

Kalev opens with the statement ‘I failed to completely unsubscribe from your site’. And ends with ‘I won’t forget to completely unsubscribe now’.

I suspect you have a problem with someone who says they will completely unscubscribe and does not, agrees with you 100% one minute, yet has shown no indication that he has changed his opinion on you being any of the 4 accusations listed above.

So while you have not been cursed you have been accused. My advice comes from scripture and is simple.

        Romans 12
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

      3. Dear Allistar

        Shalom, and love in Jesus.

I do not mind you being an advocate for others. You wrote:

        My reply:

If I am not mistaken “false teaches, wolfs in sheeps clothing, heretics filled with apostacy” are destined for the fire of Hell. Cursed by God.

        2. Peter 2: 1
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them – bringing swift destruction on themselves.

What I need to do to be saved, in this gentleman’s opinion, is to stop eating pork, embrace a neo Levitical priesthood, and support those who will recall the need for blood sacrifices in Jerusalem.

If you distribute these opinions about the editor of this site, you must not take the pain of coming back and blessing me. Telling me that I am “100 per cent correct” etc. You expose your self to be a man who has no proper fundation in your faith, and a blunt hypocrite.

And this will be the end of this debate.

    1. Dear Maria.

      Shalom and love in Jesus.

Your comment was brief, but it means a lot to me. The Pope has done grave injustice to native Americans, while flattering the elite in Washington D.C. It is a shame.

  1. Peace to you Ivar.

    You started your comment.

Lets keep the unbiblical canonization process of the Roman Catholic Church for a moment.

    Unfortunately, that is the point.

The pope has no authority to decide who is or is not a saint.

The Lord Jesus Christ taught that we should.

    Matthew 5
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

    Luke 6
27 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

    Why?

Because Our Father in Heaven says

    Romans 12
19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

Our Father in heaven has known the end from the beginning, knew what happened to the Jews in the holocaust, the native Americans and all others who have suffered.

Yet, His beloved Son in whom He was well pleased still taught love.

    Where is the love?
