Apostasy: Wasatch Church gives out Quran

A clear message from Wasatch Presbyterian Church about truth found in many books. Also the Koran.

Leaders of a Presbyterian congregation in Salt Lake City have an answer to the Florida pastor with a penchant for burning the Quran.

Wasatch Presbyterian Church is giving Islam’s holy book away for free.

“Sometimes, it’s hard to know how to push back against the lunatic fringe,” said Russell Fericks, a member of the session, or governing board, of the 350-member church on the city’s east side.

So when the new pastor, the Rev. Scott Dalgarno, asked the board last week to join him in opening their wallets, the reaction was swift.

The leaders put up $600 before the meeting was over and ordered dozens of copies of an Oxford Press edition of the Quran several days ago. The books will be available as early as Monday at King’s English Bookshop, each with a bookmark bearing these words: “This book was donated by the leaders of Wasatch Presbyterian Church, who are not afraid of truth wherever it can be found.”

The idea, Fericks said, “was simple. It was creative. It was courageous in the sense of saying, ‘We’re not afraid of the truth.’

“You don’t have to let the nincompoops of the world control all the message,” he said.

Terry Jones, the Gainesville, Fla., pastor who backed down from his threat to torch the Quran last fall, nonetheless supervised burning of the book at his church on March 20.

My Comment:

What message are you sending out as a Presbyterian Church by giving a free copy of the Quran?

I do not agree with the burning of the Quran, because Jesus Christ told us to seek peace.

Psalm 34:14

Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

But by giving out the Quran, and saying “you are not afraid of the truth”, then you do no justice in the truth which is God’s Word: The Holy Bible. You give no message and honor to Christ, by not mentioning: Accept Christ today, repent from your sins, for Our King is near.

The Quran has never been the truth.

Only Jesus Christ is.

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

  1. HALLELUJAH! Thank you father in Heaven for people of faith and courage!

Praise the eternal father and our Holy Messiah Saviour!
    “HALLELUJAH”

Larry Flint was and is a very immoral man, we do not give out pornography just to be peacemakers?

  2. By putting up 600 dollars in bying the quran they have sponsored Islam and in consequence the jihad!

I guess we don’t need islam to put an end to christianity, these so called christian churches are doing a very good job at it themselves.

Hey pastor, maybe we could even invite an imam to lecture us, now that would really be courages and creative right?!…
    Here’s a little insight in the quran;

Indeed, they have disbelieved who have said, “God is the Messiah (Jesus), son of Mary.” The Messiah said, “Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. Whoever associates partners in worship with God, then God has forbidden Paradise for him, and his home is the Fire (Hell). For the wrongdoers,3 there will be no helpers.” (Quran, 5:72)

  3. Gloria, Sue, Rose, and Mary. I am the pastor of Wasatch Presbyterian. Please let me clarify our action.

Our church is not handing out Qur’ans. It is not promoting Islam or the Quran. It is merely funding a project to buy a few dozen copies for those in our city who might want to read it and see if Pastor Jones is correct in his assumption that it incites violence. His act led to many deaths and much rancor throughout the Arab world. We are trying to assuage a teeny bit of that.

I have received appreciations from American workers in Afghanistan, saying that our action makes their lives safer. Does that make me feel we have done something good? You bet it does! American aid workers and soldiers there are so hungry for moderate Christians to speak up. Only then will moderate Muslims have what they need to turn back radical Islam.

We had a good number of visitors at our Easter services who identified themselves as Airforce personnel and families. They were effusive in their gratitude about our action.

As Presbyterians we believe in following our consciences, but our forebearers also said that conscience alone can be misguided. It needs to be informed by education. People need to be informed.

Pastor Jones’ people followed their consciences alone. But look where it led.

That is what we are doing – being an agent to help to inform people – if people study the Qur’an and Islam and come up with an understanding like yours, that’s fine. No problem. If they come to appreciate the progressive tradition of moderate Islam, seeing the parts of the Qur’an that express tolerance, and ignoring the rest, that’s great, too.

I am not ignorant of the stands of many Islamic radicals who would like to see Western Christianity perish, but there are many many more moderate Muslims who wish the others would change their tune. We are seeking to empower those Muslims who believe that their religion has been “hijacked,” as President George W. Bush famously said the Thursday following 9-11.

This is not about appeasement. It is because we are so firm in our Christian faith that we are not afraid to stand with our troops and against terror.

    1. Pastor Scott,

You said: Our church is not handing out Qur’ans. It is not promoting Islam or the Quran. It is merely funding a project to buy a few dozen copies for those in our city who might want to read it and see if Pastor Jones is correct in his assumption that it incites violence.

My Comment: What would Jesus do in this situation? Would He purchase the Quran to merely prove someone wrong? In the Word of God it says we must treat each other with respect, but Pastor Scott, I would never buy a Quran “to prove someone wrong.” I instead would speak to them about Christ, and pray for them. You purchasing the Quran is saying that “I’m okay with what the Quran says.” And I do not believe anything in that book, although I would never burn it. Our Messiah is King and always will be. Mohammed was a liar.

Your Comment: I have received appreciations from American workers in Afghanistan, saying that our action makes their lives safer.

My Comment: Pastor Scott, why should “man’s” praise be anything to you? It is us who should praise God, and the only thing you showed these American workers, is that the Quran is okay. I have to ask, while handing out this quran, did you tell whoever you gave it to, “Jesus died for your sins, rose, and is coming soon. Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near. Did you tell them that the quran is a complete lie, and that it portrays our Messiah Jesus Christ completely wrong?”

John 12:43 says: for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

Your Comment: If they come to appreciate the progressive tradition of moderate Islam, seeing the parts of the Qur’an that express tolerance, and ignoring the rest, that’s great, too.

My Comment: Why can you not tell them to appreciate Christ and the HUGE sacrifice he made for our sins? Why would you even be remotely happy with someone learning the lie of Islam?

Your Comment: I am not ignorant of the stands of many Islamic radicals who would like to see Western Christianity perish, but there are many many more moderate Muslims who wish the others would change their tune. We are seeking to empower those Muslims who believe that their religion has been “hijacked,” as President George W. Bush famously said the Thursday following 9-11.

My Comment: With all due respect, The Bible says in 1 Timothy 4:1 The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

I do pray Pastor Scott that this is not the case with you.

      God Bless

  4. Dear Pastor Dalgarno,

    Thank you for your comment.

You are absolutely sending a mixed message. Especially now as we approach a one world religion and world leaders call for a one world govt.
The Catholic church is now having “dialogue” with Muslims and other religions. They also say Catholics worship the same god and that Muslims are in the plan of salvation:
    http://www.justforcatholics.org/islam.htm
Your actions appear as if you are placating Muslims even if this is not your intention. It also makes you appear that you believe Muslims are your “brothers and sisters” as the Pope calls them. You should think twice about your actions. Because it very much appears you are joining their camp.
I am against Christians burning the Koran because it it incites violence. At the same time, I would never pass out Korans at a Bible-believing church.
The Koran tells Muslims to be kind to infidels in order to get what they want out of them. The goal of Islam is to convert the world to Sharia law. The non-radicals may not want to blow you up, but they want Sharia law enacted world-wide. This is also a type of spiritual violence that takes away freedom to worship Christ. The Koran is full of lies from the devil. Let’s call a spade a spade. Muhammad took a 6 year old child as a wife and consummated the marriage at 8 years old. He received “revelations” and hence the Koran…. and WHY do you want your congregation to read this book? On the pages, revelation from demons.
If people in your town want to read the Koran, they can buy it online as I did. They can also go to their local library or book store.
Pastor, I think it is unwise to hand out Korans. Are you furthering the Kingdom of God doing this or passing out letters from demonic entities.
    Love in Jesus,
    Sue

  5. Why do the commentators on this site continually say that they would not burn the Qur’an because it incites violence, yet you post insulting cartoons of Muslims and their customs? You also speak of the sins of their prophet Muhammad. It is hypocritical of you all that run this site when you do those things.
Not all the prophets in the Christian religion lived a sinless and perfect life either.
Instead of talking of the sins of the sinners—let’s talk about the sinless One, Jesus Christ.
This site is full of hypocrisy. Clean it up, please.

    1. His Truth,

Posting a cartoon of something is completely different then inciting violence, where people have been killed over a book about a “man” who basically lied to a huge number of people. This man says it’s okay to kill, this man said its okay to marry a 9 year old girl, I can go on if you’d like.

I agree with Sue we are all sinners, and I know I make mistakes every day. But something you won’t find me doing is giving out a Quarn to anyone. Something yhou will find me doing is speaking about the gift of salvation Jesus Christ offers to all.

  6. Dear Histruth.

We are all sinners. But I have a problem with a book written by demons and a religion that wants to take over the earth and enforce Sharia law. I also have a problem with a “prophet” that marries a 6 year old girl being raped by a grown man who is revered as holy and all of his words in the Koran. It’s ironic that a religion of “peace” wants to blow up, kill and destroy.
We are to expose the evil deeds of men and to be watchers on the wall.
It is good to talk about our sinless Savior, you are right. It is also good to make people aware of what is going on in the world, especially in the church, so that we can guard our hearts and minds.

  7. There is a way that seems right to you, but there is a better Way.
There is a right way and a wrong way to expose. And there is a way to hold up the Light.

  8. Pastor Scott,

Buying qurans and handing them out is not about truth or being honest and standing firm for Jesus Christ who said:

I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me. John 14:6

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 1john 2 verse 22

So pastor you are bying a book that has the spirit of the anti christ and handing them out to others.
You might as well give away the satanic bible because you are not affraid of the truth.

There is a difference you say? wrong because the quran is every bit of satanic since it comes from the same old source…the father of lies.

Hosea 4:6 “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me”

  9. I took the time to listen to pastor Scott’s sermon on easter (for verification you can listen to it on the church’s website).

    Below a summary;

The title of the sermon is: Jesus Elevated

Pastor Scott explains, (after talking about how easter is guided by the fases of the moon and that there is a distinctly feminine caracter to this holiday),
that the gospels disagree on a lot of details on most stories including this story.

He goes on explaining that the ressurection of Jesus was all unnatural to Mary and the discipels.(spring is natural, easter is unnatural)meaning that death is natural part of life as opposed to ressurection.

That eastermoring Mary was obsessed with the loss of Jesus and in that regard read one of his favourite poems on “the art of loosing” by Elisabeth Bishop, who was a modernist, lesbian poet born in 1911.

Moving on in his sermon to a story from his favourite collumn “Dear Abbey” about some naked woman who hid herself after she had no towels to dry herself, and then someone came at the door and she thought it was the milkman so she hid in the closet behind the door, but it was not the milkman but the meterreader who saw her naked and was surprised.
The woman then said “oh my, i thought you were the milkman”

Mary thought Jesus was the gardener the pastor then comments, as to explain the story above about the naked woman in the closet.

Proceeding his sermon on a catholic priest (a certain father Lawrence…) who was held hostage in Lebanon and after months of being blindfolded in a closet, they brought him to a rooftop, (he thought to be executed) but instead was released and had a vision on the full moon over Beirut, thinking to himself yes, there’s beauty in the world after all, even my captours can be kind.

Then moving on to a rather long story on George Dantzig, an American mathematical scientist who offered two solutions for what seemed to be unsolvable problems.

(My comment; this story is often used as a motivational lesson demonstrating the power of positive thinking.)

Then telling yet another story on a young black man that went to medical school to become a doctor.

In conclusion to his sermon he explains why his congregation put up 600 dollars for handing out copies of the quran and defends its very act by telling stories on workers in afghanistan who are grateful for this action, because it had made their work safer.

So it seems like the purpose of this sermon was to explain and defend the churches action on purchasing and handing out the quran.

The church wanted to inform people on the truth they say and to let the reader make up it’s own mind they wanted to make the quran available for them, to find out wether or not the quran promotes violence.

    My personal opinion;

Pastor Scott is supposed to teach his church on the word of God, biblical doctrine so his church members can be grounded in their faith, (ephesians 4:14)
Another commission given to the church is proclaiming the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Instead pastor Scott uses the church as a platform for social issues. I’m not saying that social issues are not important and if possible to be dealt with, but that is not the primary reason for being a church.

Easter is not about solving the social problems of man, it is about salvation through our ressuracted Lord Jesus Christ who payed for our sin in full!
