Many Born-Again Christians Hold Universalist Views, Barna Finds

One in four born-again Christians hold universalist thoughts when it comes to salvation, according to a new Barna analysis of trend data.

Twenty-five percent of born-again Christians said all people are eventually saved or accepted by God. A similar proportion, 26 percent, said a person’s religion does not matter because all faiths teach the same lessons.

And an even higher proportion, 40 percent, of born-again Christians said they believe Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

Barna defined universalism as the belief that all human beings will eventually be saved after death. The California-based research and polling firm defines born-again Christians as people who have made “a personal commitment to Jesus Christ that is still important in their life today, and who believe they will go to heaven after death because they confessed their sins and accepted Jesus Christ as their savior.

According to the Barna analysis, 43 percent of Americans in general agreed with the statement “It doesn’t matter what religious faith you follow because they all teach the same lessons,” while 54 percent disagreed.

Apostasy is the first word that comes to mind, with the meaning of falling away from the truth when I came across this article. What is the truth? Jesus Christ is the way, and the truth.

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

If you claim to be a “Christian” and you state that Muslims, Christians, Catholics, Hindus will all find the path to God and end will end up in heaven, then you are believing in Universalism, a lie told by the devil, and you are abandoning your faith in Jesus Christ, Our Only King and Savior.

1 Timothy 4:1

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.

If you do not abandon this belief taught by demons, then your soul is in jeopardy.

“Barna defined universalism as the belief that all human beings will eventually be saved after death.”

If this is the case, and the above quote from Barna Research is you being described by Barna’s Survey, you must repent from this. Read the Word of God. It’s never wrong. Do not add to it, and Do not twist it to suit your own need.

To All: Repent from your sins. The Kingdom of Heaven is near, and Christ is at the doors. Salvation is only found in Jesus Christ, while you are still breathing. After death, if you have not accepted Christ, it is too late.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1. Tot tell a person they have to turn from sin to get saved is a false works gospel. Jesus takes us just as we are and simply asks us to believe on Him for eternal life. Understanding the gospel of Grace is believing Jesus was God in Flesh and His blood paid your hell debt in full. He rose on the third day to prove to yu that His Father was satisfied with the work His Son did Isaiah 53:11. To tell a person they have to do something other then believe is to add to the cross your performance of turning from sin which makes your gospel a works gospel, and a gospel that will not save. Repent means to change your mind “metanoia” stop trusting in your helping God out and believe on His Sons work alone. Faith alone, by grace alone, through Christ alone.

    1. Dear William

      Shalom.

      You wrote:

      My comment:

      Luke 13:3
I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

      John 5:14
Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”

      (end of scriptures)

Do you really believe that man do not have to stop sinning but rather change their ways?

The Bible explains what God loves. Do it. The Bible also explains what God hates. Stop doing it.

      1 Corinthians 15:34
Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God—I say this to your shame.

      2 Peter 2:14
With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood!

      1. Wiliam

You said: To tell a person they have to do something other then believe is to add to the cross your performance of turning from sin which makes your gospel a works gospel, and a gospel that will not save.

My Comment: Believing in only “some” of the Word of God, is not believing n Jesus at all.

Jesus Christ says: Mark 1:15 says “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Mark 9:44 And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell.

      2. I have a friend who has been witnessing to a homosexual. In his own words he told the homo sexual that it will not be his homosexual lifestyle that will send him to hell but unbelief in Jesus. To a degree that is a true statement; however I asked him what he would tell him about his lifestyle if he decides to believe in Jesus. Of course he and I disagree about the repentance aspect of belief. The bible is very clear about repentance. We bury the old life with its sin and we ressurect the new life to walk in holiness. llCor.5:17 In Christ we are new creation. Old things are passed away all things become new. You cannot keep living in sin willfully. If a believer thinks he can keep on sinning with no guilt, most assuredly God will dicipline, and judge. If one continues on willfully to sin after professing his faith in Christ I then question whether or not saving faith was real. Only God knows. There is an easy believism that is taught. Those who are ministers of reconciliation must be careful in the presentation of the gospel. The whole symbolism of baptism, an ordinance that we do, means that we are buried in the likeness of his death and raised to walk in newness of life.

      3. Todd,

You said: In his own words he told the homo sexual that it will not be his homosexual lifestyle that will send him to hell but unbelief in Jesus.

My Comment: Your friend is wrong, and I feel bad that he gave such advice to this person. A person who supposedly believes in Jesus, and continues to sin (example: homosexual) will be judged.

      4. Dear Gloria.

        Shalom.

A homosexual who tell Jesus this: “Have mercy on my soul, and forgive me that I was not able to love the way you wanted me to love. Lord Jesus: Please forgive every sin I have committed. I commit my soul into your hands. Amen”.

What will happen with a homosexual who pray this prayer at the end of his life?

Will he be excluded from the kingdom of Heaven, but liars, gossipers and envious people who justify their own claimed sinlessness, will enter the Kingdom?

Why do we brand homosexuality as a sin, that is more Hellish than other sins?

Homosexuality is surely sin. But we all continue to sin, even after we are saved. There are surely issues in our life that Jesus is not pleased with, that we all need to confess as our weakness.

    2. Shalom everyone,
If one does a sincere study on the Words of our Messiah and His forerunner, John the Baptizer, one can find out that the Word they used (and so we should understand) for “Repent!!” is not “to change one’s mind, but “to return”.
The word is teshuvah or shuv which means ACTIVELY turn around from what you are currently DOING (working) and RETURN to the Ways of your God and Messiah. Even the adversary believes….. the believer should do! This brings our Father and Messiah’s Character and Image into the world for others to have a VISIBLE evidence of our Belief and walk of Faith.
Just my two cents. Important words like repent deserve extreme study and understanding – if it is important to you.
Shalom and thank you for your site.

    3. You say : “To tell a person they have to do something other then believe is to add to the cross your performance of turning from sin which makes your gospel a works gospel, and a gospel that will not save. ”

      Lord Jesus said :
And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: GO, and SIN NO MORE.
      (John 8)

He also said : If you love me : KEEP my conmmandments

      And the apostle :
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
      Jacques 2

The works are the fruits …. of our faith in Lord Jesus, given to us by the Grace of God
(not easy for me to explain such thing in english)

46 ¶And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and DO NOT the things which I say? (Luc 6 46)

Of course WE have things to do, and things not to do.
it’s not : OH yeah..i m saved because i believe ..i can’t sit down and wait …it’s gonna be ok for me..
      i can even do whatever i want…am i saved or not !!
(Is it from Calvin or Luther ?…)

And to finish :Even Satan believes that “Jesus was God in Flesh and His blood paid your hell debt in full. He rose on the third day to prove to yu that His Father was satisfied with the work His Son did.”
..but you know that Satan won’t be saved….

May the Lord have mercy on us all…

      1. The world is at a place, where Jesus Christ said it will happen prior to his coming. Our Jesus is never wrong, and comes very soon.

  2. This does not surprise me at all and is precisely why I don’t consider anyone who calls themselves a Christian to really be Christian until I hear what they believe. More and more Christians now believe in an entirely different Gospel and too many well-intentioned Christians who do understand the bible properly, are far too accommodating of them.

    1. That’s why Amargeddon this describes them perfectly:

      Matthew 7

21“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ 23Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

  3. The phrase “repentance from sin” is not found in the Bible. We repent (turn from) our efforts to establish our own righteousness for salvation. We turn to Jesus and place our trust in His shed blood AND NOTHING ELSE for our salvation. This happens in a moment, and Jesus called it being “born again.” “For by grace are ye saved through faith.”

  4. The Spirit of God comes to dwell within us at the moment we place our faith in Jesus for our salvation. It is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit that begins the process of conforming us to the image of the Lord Jesus Christ. As we follow His leading, we leave our sinful ways behind.

  5. Here’s a fast comparison:
Allah vs. the God of the Bible
    http://apologeticspress.org/apcontent.aspx?category=8&article=1174
Why Allah cannot be the God of the Bible
    http://truthwatch.info/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=83

an interesting part of this problem with all these people thinking the devil the muslims worship is the fact that their modern alexandrian bibles has removed the word Study in this verse:
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

and these lazy bums do not:
1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

they have not proven that allah is God, they would have tried they would have found out the devil allah is not a god at all.

Since they do not study they do not find out that allah is a devil.
Remember what was written in Hosea:
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

These people have rejected knowledge, but I don’t think any of these religionists were christian from the beginning, it is most likely much more like this:
Matthew 15:8 This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
Matthew 15:9 But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

  6. Are there really Christians who believe that it is a “work” when giving up sin to be saved? So it’s a work to stop stealing? So it’s a work to stop having sex with someone else beside your spouse?! We have to obey Jesus, that is how we can have the Father and Jesus living inside of us. That is how we receive the Holy Spirit.

Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. John 14:23

  7. “and you hath He quickened who were dead in trespasses and sin…” Eph 2:1.
How does a dead person do anything? Eg, repent?
Who gives repentance? Acts 11:18; 2Tim2:25

    1. E,
You don’t understand the scriptures because you let people from the Calvin camp confuse you.

      Read 2 Timothy 2:25 carefully…

Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,

Did you read how opponents must be gently instructed? Why does it matter how someone is instructed if it is God making them repent?
      Please get out of Calvinism.

  8. His Truth
A few short points 1st, I’m choosing to take your comments as iron sharpening iron. 2nd, I am FAR from a Calvinist. I can see how based on such a short discourse, you could come to that conclusion. 3rd, I disagree with your modern translation.

    1. E,
I surely have been sharpened by discussing this with you.
I must say, if you take my comments, then you take God’s truth, because that is what I’m speaking.
You are not so far from a Calvinist if you think all are so dead that no one can hear and repent, because that is a Calvinist belief to say no one can do those things.
You can use any translation you want, the Word still says the same.
The message of Jesus is clear and simple: We learn the truth about Jesus dying for us; and we repent and turn to God and prove our repentance by our deeds.
To say that we get the Holy Spirit first to make us repent…that goes against the scriptures, for the scriptures say we receive the Holy Spirit after obeying, not before.
Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
John 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
Acts 5:32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
