The best way to get the World to blame Israel for a war, is to start one against the Jewish state.
Several Muslim leaders have made pronouncements about how Israel is threatening to start a war. This is pure rubbish, and their is worry in Israel that they are saying we are getting ready to start a war because they are getting ready to start one and they want to be able to blame us for it.
Aaron in Jerusalem.
I am sending this letter to all of you and asking you to share it with your email and prayer groups, Bible studies and congregations because the issue is very urgent.
The situation in Lebanon today is very complicated, but I’ll try to make it simple and tell you why it’s important for Israel.
In 2005, Rafiq Hariri, the Sunni Muslim Prime Minister of Lebanon, was assassinated.
His son, Sa’ad Hariri, is now the Prime Minister of Lebanon.
The United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon (UNSTL) has been investigating the assassination of Rafiq Hariri for five years and is prepared to issue indictments in the case within the next couple of weeks.
Initially, most people believed that agents of the Syrian government were behind the assassination, but now there is good reason to believe that the UNSTL has evidence that Hizbullah carried out the hit.
Hizbullah is a terrorist army backed by Iran. It has a fascinating history and you can look it all up on Wikipedia if you’re interested. For the purposes of this letter it’s enough for you to know that Lebanon is a country that is divided up into several ethnic, religious and cultural groups which don’t have much in common.
Most of them have their own private army to protect themselves from all the other private armies (the national Lebanese Army is theoretically supposed to protect the entire country but no one is under any illusions that it can) and Hizbullah is the army of the Shi’ite Muslims, and is largely a proxy of Iran. The CIA has assessed that if the Iranians give the order, Hizbullah can take over the government of Lebanon in a few hours.
If that were to happen it would be interesting to see if they could do a better job of running the country than all the other governments it’s had, but I’m getting off topic.
In the summer of 2006 Israel suffered tremendously under a barrage of Hizbullah missiles in a war which lasted 34 days. Below is a short video about that which I encourage you to watch and share with others who pray for this country.
Today, Hizbullah has almost four times the number of rockets it had in 2006, including an unknown number of highly sophisticated, long range weapons which can target Israel’s critical infrastructure.
Now, what ties all this together?
If, as everyone expects, the UNSTL issues indictments against Hizbullah in the assassination of Rafiq Hariri in the next couple of weeks, there is a good chance that the armed Lebanese factions which are opposed to Hizbullah, which are led by Sa’ad Hariri, the current Prime Minister and son of the slain Rafiq, will attack Hizbullah and start a new round of civil war in the country.
Aside from the obvious fact that a war is always a bad thing, this could be very bad for Israel because the easiest way for Hizbullah to put an end to such a situation, or even to preempt it, would be to attack Israel and thus divert everyone’s attention away from its own misconduct.
In the last several weeks, leaders of the surrounding countries have visited Beirut in order to show support for their favored Lebanese faction. The leaders of Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Turkey, the US and others have all been there.
The leaders of the Muslim countries, who are bitter enemies of each other, have all shown support for their own favorite factions against the others. But at the same time they have all agreed that the main problem in Lebanon is the fact that to Lebanon’s south there is a country called Israel and the best thing Lebanese could do for themselves is to forget about their fights with each other and unite to attack Israel.
So you see the problem.
Israel did not create the situation in Lebanon, but many people (most of whom just happen to be Muslim) think that the solution is to be found in attacking Israel.
So, please pray for this situation and ask others to pray about it. If you want to do more than that, write letters to your elected officials and local newspapers (if you’re blessed to still have one) and blogs, etc. and make some noise about this situation. Let people know that Israel’s enemies are lying about Israel being the one threatening war in the Middle East, and let them know that Hizbullah and its Iranian sponsors are the ones who are causing the problem.
God bless you all!
