STRASBOURG : The Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan has rejected the Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen as new NATO secretary-general. The Danish PM has been targeted for his handling of a row over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad.
The Danish prime minister, in 2005 refused to condemn a Danish Journalist who published caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. The Danish PM rightfully did so based on a defense of freedom of expression in the free World, which NATO was formed to defend. Turkey is still waiting for Rasmussen’s apology.
In January 2009, The Turkish Prime Minister walked out of the World Economic Summit in Davos in anger. The last thing Erdoğan did before he left, was to support the Gaza rule of the radical Islamic terrorist organization Hamas, followed by an insult of the Israeli President Shimon Perez.
The Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdoğan can not be trusted. He has already challenged the secular constitution of Turkey, which is defended by the Turkish Military leadership. When Erdoğan now attacks the right to freedom of expressions, NATO should consider him an enemy of the values NATO was formed to defend. As long as Erdoğan is Prime Minister, EU should put on hold any talks of granting Turkey membership in EU, which is based on the same principles of freedom that Erdoğan rejects.
