The media watchdog will investigate claims a «terrorist» TV station is being broadcast into Australia via Indonesian satellites.
Al-Manar TV, backed by Hezbollah, has twice been investigated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority but now faces a broader investigation, including compliance with racial vilification laws.
Australia Israel and Jewish Affairs Council executive director Colin Rubenstein said Australia should follow the lead of France, the US and Canada by banning the station.
«Al-Manar is a station owned and operated by a terrorist organisation, which airs programs espousing hatred of Jews and glorification of terrorism,», Dr Rubenstein said.
«We have long argued that either ACMA or the government undertake whatever initiative is required to change Australia’s anti-terrorism standard to ensure that all media owned and operated by terrorist organisations be banned»
Dr Rubenstein referred to the channel as «terrorist TV»
The Opposition has been pushing for a broader inquiry into the station, picked up by rooftop satellites from a channel retransmitted by an Indonesian satellite.
Hezbollah is not banned in Australia although one of its wings, the External Security Organisation, is listed as a terrorist entity
