We need to ship aid to Gaza like we did during the Berlin airlift.
This is a statement by US Congressman Brian Baird, a Democrat from Washington state. In a debate with students from Gaza, Baird suggests the United States should should break Israel’s blockade of Gaza and deliver badly needed supplies by sea.
«We ought to bring roll-on, roll-off ships and roll them right to the beach and bring the relief supplies in, in our version of the Berlin airlift»he said, adding that the supplies could be delivered to UN aid agencies.
Brian Baird also urged President Barack Obama’s Mideast envoy to visit the Hamas-ruled territory to get a firsthand look at the destruction caused by Israeli’s military offensive last year.
The Obama administration, like its predecessor, shuns Hamas because the Islamic militant group refuses to recognize Israel or renounce violence. Israel and Egypt have restricted access to Gaza since Hamas’ victory in parliament elections in 2006 and tightened the blockade after Hamas seized Gaza by force in 2007.
Israel allows humanitarian supplies and food into Gaza, but has kept out cement and other building supplies needed for reconstruction. Israel argues such materials could be diverted by Hamas for military use.

When Congressman Brian Baird speaks about an «Israeli blockade» He simply do not speak the truth. There are tons of aid transported from Israel into Gaza every day.
This is the radical opposite situation than the affairs at the Egypt-Gaza border. That border is closed.
And since Muslim Egypt do not want to open its border with Gaza, why do a US Politician feel that United State should be more favorable and «radical» towards Hamas than «moderate» Muslims?
The US foreign policy in the Middle East is getting more confusing day by day, and this congressman is contradicting him self.
It is also a disstastful political statement to compare Gaza with West-Berlin. Because the Russians build a wall in Berlin, to stop German lovers of peace and democracy from fleeing from a totalitarian regime. In Gaza, Israel to the radical opposite tries to avoid totalitarian Islamic terrorists from entering the free and democratic state of Israel.
While the people of West Berlin did elect their own government, the people of Gaza are under the yoke of a terrorist-organization who grabbed power in a bloody military cue.
While the US correctly airlifted aid for Berlin to keep the fee and democratic Western part of the city from falling into the hands of the Communists, the US should rater support the Israeli and Egyptian restrictions on Gaza. Thats the best way to support the people who live in Gaza, to help them to gain their freedom and get rid of Hamas.
