Haiti, the devil and Pat Robertson

The people of Haiti made a deal with the devil, to get liberated from the French colonialism, a revelation expressed by Word of Faith preacher Pat Robertson.

Pat Robertson seems to have good contacts with the devil.

While hosting «the 700 Club» on the Christian Broadcasting Network Wednesday, Robertson said the 7.0-magnitude quake that struck Haiti a day earlier was the consequence of the curse that had befallen the country’s people after its founding fathers made a «pact to the Devil» in exchange for Haiti’s independence from France.

«Ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor» Robertson said.

Robertson based his comment on a well-known folk tale among Haitians that not all citizens believe.

Similarly, Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, responded to Robertson’s «embarrassing» remarks by highlighting the «Theological arrogance matched to ignorance»

In a commentary posted Thursday, Mohler acknowledged that Haiti has a well-known history of the occult, voodoo, and sorcery. He also said he agrees that God does and will judge the nations and has sovereign power over everything.

But the highly respected evangelical scholar said «we have no right to claim that we know why a disaster like the earthquake in Haiti happened at just that place and at just that moment».

Haiti in rubble. The President lost both his palace and private house.

«Will God judge Haiti for its spiritual darkness? Of course», he added. But humans cannot claim to understand the judgment of God.

To illustrate his point, Mohler brought out a series of unanswerable questions.

«Why did no earthquake shake Nazi Germany? Why did no tsunami swallow up the killing fields of Cambodia? Why did Hurricane Katrina destroy far more evangelical churches than casinos? Why do so many murderous dictators live to old age while many missionaries die young?» he posed.

My comment:

Albert Mohler, Jr asks a few interesting questions, which he claims has no answers.

«Why did no earthquake shake Nazi Germany?».

Well it did. Eight million Germans lost their life in World war II. The Majority of them soldiers fighting for Hitler. The city of Berlin was left in rubble, worse affected than if an earthquake had hit the German capital. Next, the iron curtain was built, and punished the areas where the Nazi death camps had been built.

Why did Hurricane Katrina destroy far more evangelical churches than casinos?

Did it, really? I thought Churches are built of living stones.

Why do so many murderous dictators live to old age while many missionaries die young?

And whats suppose to be wrong with that? In Evangelical Christianity we learn that Heaven is a better place to be than Earth.

I do not agree with Pat Robertson`s comments. He glorify`s French colonialism and curse poor people calling poverty a curse. Its important to remind men like Robertson that also the two richest men of Haiti lost everything. The President did survive. The Catholic Archbishop perished.

Robertson also talks like the devil has equal powers as the living God. Thats wrong. Under no circumstance is the devil the final authority. Judgment ,rebukes and discipline belongs to God of the Bible.

But Patterson is right in regards to a living God that brings judgment to Earth, and that the nation of Haiti has been punished for witchcraft.

Sodom and Gomorra was destroyed by God Most high because of wickedness and sin. When this Baptist theologian claims man can not understand God`s judgment, he claims man is not able to read the Bible.

    1. Dear Kirkd.

Shalom, and welcome back after a long time.

The «Church house» can be a stallion, a railway station or a bar. It is basically a gathering of people who believe Jesus is the Messiah.

      Acts 8:3
But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.

      Acts 11:22
News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.

      1 Corinthians 14:23
So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

A Church that goes from house to house, who have ears, and that comes together is not «a building». It is not made of stone and wood.

  1. As Jesus said to the jews they condemn themselves when they condemned him.So this must have happened amongst haiti which is a form of witchcaft.Witchcraft after all is cursing brothers and sisters of their own.Such things like that brings rise to wrath amongst themselves.THat is why we are commanded to forgive and bless one another. To bear with eachothers fault so that we many not rise in anger and sin or curse our brethren. That is all Ihave to say see my website I made a vid. of why we should help haiti. If we allow haiti to stay in ashes then we do not have faith that God can restore a nation that was once in the wrong.

  2. Thank you, thank you for your logical perspective on the rather thoughtless comments of Pat Robertson. I happen to like the guy and I have seen nothing but unbridled bashing of his comments laced with the usual name-calling and profanity. We need less of that in print and more of the above–a balanced approach on the comments of others.

    1. Dear Teb2nes.

Shalom, and welcome to this site.

God of the Bible will not spare the rich and famous. Neither will he spare a poor man who do not repent. Jesus never said: «Blessed are the rich, they shall inherit the Kingdom of God». The truth is, that It might be more easy for a poor man to put Jesus first. Simply because He is less tempted to become a lover of this present World.

  3. The truth is that they did make a pact with the devil.

Now the significance you put on that pact I guess has to do with whether you believe the devil is real or not.

But it is one of Haiti’s founding myths.

According to Haitian national history, the revolutionary war was launched on the eve of a religious ceremony at a place in the north called Bwa Kayiman (Bois Caiman, in French). At that ceremony on August 14, 1791, an African slave named Boukman sacrificed a pig, and both Kongo and Creole spirits descended to possess the bodies of the participants, encouraging them and fortifying them for the upcoming revolutionary war. Despite deep ambivalence on the part of intellectuals, Catholics, and the moneyed classes, Vodou has always been linked with militarism and the war of independence and, through it, the pride of national sovereignty.

So, yeah if there is a devil, Haiti made a pact with it. Might explain why even though Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the same island, the Dominican Republic has been far more successful.

  4. Hello, I like your site and think you have some very interesting posts, I’ll be sure to add you to my favourites. Cheers,Joanna
