In an alarming escalation of the proxy war between Iran and Israel, Azerbaijan has accused two men they say are Hizbullah operatives of planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in the capital city of Baku.

Azerbaijani authorities have also accused four local men of collaborating with the Hizbullah terror cell, who were planning the operation with help from Iran in order to exact revenge for the February 2008 assassination of senior Hizbullah commander Imad Mughniyeh in Damascus.

According to a senior Israeli defense officials briefing to The Jerusalem Post on Sunday, the attack was also meant to destabilize the governments of moderate Muslim countries that have relations with Israel and to intimidate other countries into not dealing with Israel. The official added that Iranian attempts to subvert Azerbaijan were identical to its attempts to cause problems for governments of other Arab and Muslim countries which were friendly towards Israel and the West.
